Design Brief

Seeking to revitalize the 50-year-old KickingBird Golf Club, the city of Edmond, OK, engaged Bockus Payne to transform the facility into an inviting community asset for golfers and non-golfers alike. Collaborating on the new clubhouse and special events center, the design team delivered a municipal facility that brings the value and amenities of a private club to the greater community. The collaborative team created a space that caters to every aspect of the golf experience.

Driving through the tree-lined entry into the parking lot, patrons of the new KickingBird Golf Club encounter a wide range of available activities. The site of the former parking lot is now home to a short game practice area, a teaching area for beginners, a covered range pavilion, and an expanded driving range, all spearheaded by golf design expert Matthew Dusenberry. The emphasis on short game and teaching amenities is unique to KickingBird and speaks to its mission of serving the greater community—it is the only municipal golf course in the state with publicly accessible teaching elements.

Bockus Payne merged modern materials such as stone and wood-look aluminum panels with traditional clubhouse forms such as the classic, residential style metal pitched roofing. Materials were carefully selected for their durability and to align with the team’s goal in creating a long-lasting, easily-maintained building.
